Something to Learn from Korea New 2D Fighting Game - Mini Fighter
Since the early Street Fighter days, versus fighting games have evolved a lot. But there’s one common trait that’s evident in Street Fighter, Tekken, King of Fighters, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat and Dead or Alive and that is the thrill of KOing your opponent(s) and reign supreme.
However, VS games only provide you with 1 feature…Fighting. No more, no less. You are in the game to fight only. No buying of items, exploring mysterious lands or chatting with friends, your mission is to fight till your challenger or…you drop dead.
Is it possible to play quizzes, participate in a chat room and fight one another in a fighting game? Ok, not doing all at once but at least you can do all the above stuff in one game. Sounds impossible? Korea’s 2D PC online fighting game, Mini Fighter, allows you to do all that.

So what can game developers of VS games or creators of online leisure games learn from Mini Fighter? Here are some points from what I can see:
1. Add Elements to the already Boring Fighting Genre
I agree that fighting games are not fighting games without fighting. The thing is…besides pure brawling and executing fancy combos, can VS games give more value to players? After numerous rounds of fights, can players just chill out in a chat room or lounge to exchange pointers and talk crap? As an old “fighting” gamer, I want to see something different in future VS games.
2. Simplicity Owns All in PC Leisure Gaming
Most of the players of leisure games are actually…girls. Maybe I’m wrong but most gals I came across don’t like too much technical stuff in a video game. Therefore, it’s difficult if your PC fighting game is all about fanciful combos that can only be executed with different keystrokes in a timely fashion. Mini Fighter has taken note and shortens the learning curve by allowing beginners (noobs) and players to execute combos effortlessly with as little key-popping as possible. And by making the game 2D, lagging is almost none.
3. Make Leisure Gaming Work like Social Networking
For those who can’t find fun in beating one another down in Mini Fighter, they can find pleasure in making friends in this adorable fighting game. Fighting may be the major part but players can also form guilds in Mini Fighter, bond with one another and participate in non-violent mini games such as a game of soccer. Developers and designers take note.
However, there’s one thing that makers of fighting games or any other games should not learn from this game and that is…
Blatant Music Copying. The music of Mini Fighter sounds just like one that came out straight from Super Mario. Although this game is still in beta, I would be glad if the BGM is original or at least, something that I have no clue that it’s copied from somewhere else.
