Can Jessica Biel Be Chun Li?

by Patrick on May 12th, 2007

Street Fighter from Capcom is celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, 2008, with a whole line of SF stuff such as new games, TV series and even a new Street Fighter movie that will center on Miss Chun Li (her kids should have grown up by now if she was not a video game character).

Capcom and Hyde Park Entertainment are the forces behind this 2008-must-release SF movie. Rumour has it that Jessica Biel will star as the formidable Chun Li.

Jessica Biel as Chun Li?

But isn’t Chun Li a Chinese? As we all remember, Chun Li is from China with black hair. Unless Chun Li dyes her hair or Jessica does the same with her brown hair, Jessica doesn’t look abit like Chun Li, appearance wise. And you still got her eyes to consider.

To help you recall, Ming-Na is Chun Li in the first SF movie (Jean-Claude Van Damme based). Ming-Na is Chinese-American while Jessica is pure American. Ming-Na looks Asian but Jessica? Is almost to none. I just don’t understand why Jessica is chosen as the first-made popular female video game character. Why can’t they choose Zhang Ziyi, Yonjin Kim from Lost, or even some unknown Chinese or look-like-Chinese (Chun Li) female actresses or girls?

Ming Na as Chun Li

A trip to China can easily shortlist an army of Chinese girls who can speak fluent English, flawless Mandarin and know some Martial Arts, hovering and kicking in mid-air is not a requirement though. Chun Li is really Chun Li, if you know what I mean.

I’m not biased against Jessica, it’s just that she’s not suitable for the role of Chun Li. I must say I won’t pay to go into the theatre to watch a Chun Li movie without any of the Chun Li likeness.

Ok first of all…frankly the first SF live action film….was…..shall we say horrible? So any improvement on that is ok in my book. Sadly no one ever pays any attention to the t.v. series or animated movies that come out that are so well done and well written. On top of that the live action movie was poorly acted and badly directed. It had nothing of what made the game enjoyable. I say frankly, get someone who enjoys the game and knows what it is about to write it and someone who knows how to direct to direct it and then start talking about people who can play parts….sadly this and the Dragonball film due out later this year both look to be flops from what i have seen.

    I agree, Mizino.
I seriously hope they base the movie
off of the actual animated series.. and same
with the character’s looks, personalities, fighting styles, ect…. Its such a shame we’d have to wait so long for another Street Fighter.. Heh how hard can it be to make a kick ass & fun movie off of a series.. I mean shit, the work is already done for them. All they have to do is read up on any mangas and watch all of the series.

Just a suggestion, but i think Bing Bing Li (or Li Bing Bing) would make an excellent choice for Chun Li. Those of you who have seen Forbidden Kingdom will recognize her as the “witch” or “she who was born of wolves. To put it plainly - the hot assassin chick with white hair who used a whip. Although with the proper make-up, jessica biel could do it too… i mean, come on, Robert Downy Jr. is playing a black man in Tropic Thunder. But make-up or not, they should definitely use Bing Bing Li.
