At Least It’s Purty

I really wanted to like this game. I tried, really I did.
I had read teasers and seen the E3 ‘o6 trailer and what’s not to like.
Right?
Wrong.
I’m not the first to pan Lair; I know I won’t be the last.
I should have known when I saw a used Lair the day after its release that something was wrong.
But, I’ve always been one of those people who has to learn the hard way. [Did you know that stoves are hot and that leather pants and fraternity parties don’t mix?]
My own preconceived notions of what I wanted Lair to be was one reason that I was so disappointed by this game.
Maybe it’s the RPG fan in me, but I wanted some customization…more dragon interaction…real character interaction.
Such promise. Such beautiful graphics. [sometimes]
But, there was never any break in the action.
What does a girl have to do to get something other than mayhem?
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy blood shed and evisceration just as much as the next guy [girl] but after a while the game just got boring. Chase and kill the ice dragons. Kill the enemy soldiers. Rinse and repeat.
I’m sure you’re wondering if there was anything good about the game. Didn’t I like something about Lair?
Ok. There were a few things:
#1 The graphics…sometimes. I say sometimes because there were times when the rendering of the game looked amazing. But, after I payed as much as I did for my PS3, the game better look amazing. There were times though when the graphics reminded me of my original PlayStation. It didn’t happen often…so I guess #1 can still count as a positive.
#2 It’s a good flight simulator. I’m stretching here folks. Since all you do is fly around and kill things, it would be very sad indeed if this aspect sucked. Then again, your dragon flies so slowly that I often got bored with the whole deal. Yes, you can get it to go “faster”. But that requires you to beat the shit out of your dragon and even then the thing only accelerates to a depressingly slow speed. The controls were hard to get a handle on and were counter-intuitive. #2 is definitely not a positive…I tried though.
#3 It’s easy to kill stuff. On the surface, that seems like a great thing. Trust me though when I say that like most things in the game, the targeting sucks. Almost every kill left me feeling somewhat cheated.
I give up guys. I tried to say something nice about Lair…I just can’t.
This game sucked.
We rented Lair and I have never been happier that I didn’t pay the $60 for this piece of crap.
